Analytical Study Of Anatomy Of Shrngataka Marma – Sira Predominant variety.

Abstract of the ppt presented:-
Shrngataka marma is a sira predominant & Sadhyo Marana variety of marma .

It is 4 angulas of circumference. It is a conglomeration of 4 veins draining from the region of nose, eyes, ear & oral cavity respectively.

Hence is 4 in number on each side of the face.

Angular, Nasal, Superior Labial Vein & Inferior Palpebral veins are the structures present adjacent to the area of manipulation of Shrngatak marma .Controversy Of ascertaining The Shrngataka marma. But in case of any external manipulation, it is not possible to work over the cavernous sinus. Where as the veins over anterior surface of Face can be manipulated or massaged. And if we consider the version of Sushrutha while explaining the procedure of SNEHANA NASYAM , which states as - श्रुंगाटकं अभिप्लाव्य निरेती वदनात्यथा “ (Shrngatakam abhi plAvya nireti vadnAt yatha) ”, it is analytically convincing to consider , the presence of the marma ,in the anterior of face.

Certain authors are of the opinion that the Shrngataka marma is present in the anterior portion of the face. But another section of them consider the Cavernous sinus to be the Shrngatak .

But at the same time, by considering the following verse of Sushrutha in shareera sthana - “ घ्राण श्रोत्र अक्षि जिहवा संतार्पणीनां सिराणं मध्ये सिरा सन्निपात: श्रुंगाटकाणि (GhrANa Shrotra Akshi JihvA santarpaNInAm sirANAm madhye sira sannipAta : ShrngATakAni) ”, Cavernous Sinus eludes one’s mind.

Further more while explaining the अतियोग लक्षण of गढ शिरोविरेचन (Atiyoga lakshana of GADha Shirovirecana) , Sushrutha mentions the following clinical manifestations namely मस्तुलुंगो अगमो; शिरो शुन्यता; & इन्द्रिय विभ्रम (Mastulunga Agamo ; shiro shUnyatA & Indriya vibhrama).

There by a structure like Cavernous sinus be taken into consideration. The Cavernous Sinus is laterally bound by Duramater containing the CSF (mastulunga). When Cavernous sinus gets inflamed it cause irritation to the opthalmatory apparatus.

Analysis Of How नासा हि शिरसो द्वारं तेन तद्व्याप्य हन्ति तान ।। (Nasa Hi Shiraso Dvaram , Tena Tad VyApya Hanti TAn). The reference from Charaka-siddhi 9/88-Trimarmeeya siddhi adhyaya states– नस्त: कर्म कुर्वीत शिरोरोगेषु शास्त्रविद । द्वारं हि शिरसो नासा तेन तद्व्याप्य हन्ति तान ।। ( Nasta : karma kurvIta shirorogeSHu ShAstravid | dvAram hi shiraso nAsA tena tad vyApya hanti tAn || )

Katikataruna Marma - Bone predominant Kalantarapranahara variety of Marma

The Katikataruna marma, has helped in giving relief in many diseases related to the prstha pradesha & the adho udara bhaga related pathologies.
The details of the Katikataruna, as per the classical textual reference of Sushrutha & it’s interpretation as of my understanding with the modern anatomy is being discussed henceforth.
Katikataruna location:-

On either side of the vertebral column at the place where in each of the component (i.e the Ileum & Ischium) of the shroni kandam (hip bone) join together to form the Katikataruna marma.

Marma Chikitsa in Ayurveda: Unlocking the Body’s Vital Energy Points for Healing

Marma Chikitsa
is a unique and powerful healing therapy rooted in the ancient science of Ayurveda.

The word “Marma” literally means a tender, vital point in the body where muscles, nerves, joints, bones, tendons, arteries, and veins intersect.

These points are crucial because they contain the life energy or Prana, essential for maintaining health and longevity.

What is Marma According to Ancient Wisdom?

The legendary surgeon Sushruthacharya, known as the father of surgery, defined Marma as “Marayanthi ithi marma,” meaning injury to these vital points can cause severe pain, malfunction of local organs, or even sudden death. He explained that life energy flows through these points, and any damage can lead to a loss of vitality.

There are 108 Marma points in the human body, each classified based on anatomical structures involved and clinical effects if injured. These are divided into five types based on severity:

Sadhyapranahara Marma: Injury causes immediate life risk.

Kalantara Pranahara Marma : Injury leads to gradual loss of life.

Vishalyaghna Marma : Injury with a foreign object; removal may be fatal.

Vaikalyakara Marma : Injury causes deformity of dependent organs.

Rujakara Marma
: Injury causes intense pain but no deformity or death.

Important Marma Points and Their Role:

Here are some clinically significant Marmas and their locations:

Kshipra (Hand and Foot Marma): Located between the index and thumb fingers and between the big toe and second toe. It covers nerve branches important for mobility and sensation.

Manibandha (Wrist Marma): Found on the ventral wrist, it involves nerves and ligaments vital for hand function.

Katikataruna (Spinal Marma): Adjacent to the sacro iliac joint, it affects bone, artery, and ligament health in the lower back.

Shrngataka (Facial Marma): Above the maxillary sinuses, important in therapies like Nasya Karma, it supports nasal, eye, ear, and mouth health.

Conditions Benefited by Marma Chikitsa:

Marma therapy has shown remarkable benefits for various disorders, including:

Paralysis and neurological conditions

Sciatica

Brachialgia

Osteo arthritis

Migraine and tremors

Diabetic neuropathy

Muscular cramps

Trigeminal neuralgia

Bell’s palsy

Lumbar and cervical spondylitis or disc prolapse

Intercoastal Neuralgia

Ilio inguinal nerve pain

Genitofemoral nerve pain

Dorsal scapular nerve entrapment

Sural nerve pain

Tibialis Anterior Tendinitis

Tibialis Anterior Nerve pain

Tibial stress syndrome / Shin splints

Saphenous nerve entrapment

Deep peroneal nerve pain

Baxter's neuropathy involving lateral plantar nerve

How Does Marma Chikitsa Work?

By stimulating these vital points through precise pressure and massage, Integrative Marma Taping, the Marma Chikitsa activates the body’s energy channels (Nadis), enhancing blood and lymph circulation, relieving pain, and restoring balance to the nervous system. It encourages the flow of Prana or life energy, promoting healing, rejuvenation, and improved immune function.

This therapy not only relieves physical ailments but also supports mental and emotional well being by reducing stress, improving sleep quality, and enhancing concentration.

Why Choose Marma Chikitsa?

Holistic healing: Treats root causes, not just symptoms.

Non-invasive and safe: Uses herbal oils and gentle stimulation.

Personalized: Therapy is customized to your physical and energetic needs.

Boosts vitality: Enhances body’s own healing power and longevity.
