Abstract of the ppt presented:-

  • Shrngataka marma is a sira predominant & Sadhyo Marana variety of marma .
  • It is 4 angulas of circumference. It is a conglomeration of 4 veins draining from the region of nose, eyes,ear & oral cavity respectively.
  • Hence is 4 in number on each side of the face.
  • Angular, Nasal, Superior Labial Vein & Inferior Palpebral veins are the structures present adjacent to the area of manipulation of Shrngatak marma .
  • Controversy Of ascertaining The Shrngataka marma. But in case of any external manipulation, it is not possible to work over the cavernous sinus. Where as the veins over anterior surface of Face can be manipulated or massaged. And if we consider the version of Sushrutha while explaining the procedure of SNEHANA NASYAM , which states as - श्रुंगाटकं  अभिप्लाव्य  निरेती वदनात्यथा  “ (Shrngatakam abhi plAvya nireti vadnAt yatha) ”, it is analytically convincing to consider , the presence of the marma ,in the anterior of face. Certain authors are of the opinion that the Shrngataka marma is present in the anterior portion of the face. But another section of them consider the Cavernous sinus to be the Shrngatak . But at the same time, by considering the following verse of Sushrutha in shareera sthana - “ घ्राण  श्रोत्र अक्षि जिहवा संतार्पणीनां  सिराणं  मध्ये सिरा सन्निपात: श्रुंगाटकाणि (GhrANa Shrotra Akshi JihvA santarpaNInAm sirANAm madhye sira sannipAta : ShrngATakAni) ”, Cavernous Sinus eludes one’s mind. Further more while explaining the अतियोग लक्षण of गढ  शिरोविरेचन (Atiyoga lakshana of GADha Shirovirecana) , Sushrutha mentions the following clinical manifestations namely मस्तुलुंगो अगमो; शिरो शुन्यता; & इन्द्रिय विभ्रम (Mastulunga Agamo ; shiro shUnyatA & Indriya vibhrama). There by a structure like Cavernous sinus be taken into consideration. The Cavernous Sinus is laterally bound by Duramater containing the CSF (mastulunga). When Cavernous sinus gets inflamed it cause irritation to the opthalmatory apparatus.

  • Analysis Of How नासा हि शिरसो द्वारं तेन तद्व्याप्य हन्ति तान ।। (Nasa Hi Shiraso Dvaram , Tena Tad VyApya Hanti TAn). The reference from Charaka-siddhi 9/88-Trimarmeeya siddhi adhyaya states– नस्त: कर्म कुर्वीत शिरोरोगेषु शास्त्रविद । द्वारं हि शिरसो नासा तेन तद्व्याप्य हन्ति तान ।। ( Nasta : karma kurvIta shirorogeSHu ShAstravid | dvAram hi shiraso nAsA tena tad vyApya hanti tAn || )

  • Flow Chart of How नस्यं (Nasyam) Influences the शिरस (Shiras), when  Nasya dravya  is instilled in to Nasa.

  • Analytical flow chart of how  मर्म पीडन (Marma manipulation) of Shrngatak over anterior aspect of face influences Cerebral Circulation.
