KSIPRA MARMA (क्षिप्र)-The Snayu predominant Kalantara variety of Marma

Dr.Bhat.A.Rangaprasad -Sarve janah Sukhino Bhavanthu || Sarve santhu Niramayah ||

Word Meaning of the above Marma:

Kshipra literally means instantaneous or too quick. On the contrary the effect of injury to this marma does not cause instant death as the word meaning implies, but results gradually as of the classification. I presume that the importance of the meaning lies in the concept, that the area where this marma is present gets injured quickly during the martial arts or during war, since it lies in the most approachable area in both the hands and legs!

Numbers of the above Marma:

1 in each of the dorsal aspects of the hands and 1 in each of the dorsal aspects of the foot.

Classification category of the above Marma:

 Snayu marma; Kalantara pranahara marma.

Measurement of the above Marma:

As per Sushruta in chapter 6,verse26 of shareera sthana the circumference of Kshipra is half angula.{Angula means the width of one's own finger, probably the ring finger, which usually is roughly 1.5 or 2 cms in an adult finger. In that case half finger's width (half angula) must be 1 cm}.

Location of the above Marma:

In upper limb:- It is present in the space of web present in between the 1st and 2nd meta carpals, almost near the apex of the web.

In lower limb:- It is present in the space of web present in between the 1st and 2nd meta tarsals, almost near the apex of the web.

Method of palpation of the above Marma:

In upper limb:- Place your ring and thumb finger over the tip of the web formed between the 1st&2nd metacarpals and slowly and simultaneously start pressing and moving at different levels upwards until you reach the apex of the triangle of the web. At one particular point one will feel the most tenderful spot almost near the apex of the web, which is supposed to be the area of Kshipra.

In lowerlimb:- Place your ring and thumb finger over the tip of the web formed between the 1st&2nd metatarsals and slowly and simultaneously start pressing and moving at different levels upwards until you reach the apex of the triangle of the web. At one particular point one will feel the most tenderful spot almost near the apex of the web, which is supposed to be the area of Kshipra.

Anatomical structures related to the above Marma:

In hands underneath the ksipra marma lies the branch of the radial artery; termination of Ulnar nerve in thumb, flexor pollicis brevi musc; adductor pollicis brevi muscle.

In the legs the anatomically important structures present are dorsal digital branches of deep fibular nerve;dorsal digital arteries;tendon of extensor digitalis longus etc.,

Name of some diseases in which the above Marma is tenderful:

Lumbar spondilitis; Cervical spondilitis; calcaneal spur; pes cavus; gouty arthritis; Ankle sprain;  Rheumatoid arthritis; Varicose veins due to thrombosis in either deep vein or superficial vein causing edema of foot; Sciatica; Brachialgia; Carpal tunnel syndrome;Wrist sprain; Cervical and Lumbar spondilosis etc., to name a few have been observed to present with a tenderful spot of Kshipra marma.
